404 9Ball Series Event #6 - Jan 26,27,2008.

John Morra used to say that he has never won at Bigwigs. Well, he can't say that anymore after soundly defeating all suitors on this final weekend of January. The field was not large in numbers but the strength of the contenders was evident in the calcutta. The Saturday starting field of 43 was eliminated down to 8 by late Saturday evening.

The Sunday returnee's were A-Side contenders Andrew Attard (9) vs Mike Patroyicz (7) - Andrew slips by 9-1. The other A-Side match is John Morra (10) vs Arbi Seyranian (6) - John squeaks by 10-1. The A-Side final of Andrew Attard vs John Morra goes hill/hill, John gets to the table and plays hook that Andrew won't forget for a long time. With the only option being a kick from a short rail, Andrew begins to experience that sunken feeling that you get when you know that one shot put you out. Andrew takes a swing, fouls and John runs out to take the match.

The B-side matches were entertaining to say the least. First to go was Erik Hjloriefson. Erik (10)managed to create an 8-3 lead over Elio D'Andrea (7) only to watch it slip away as Elio managed to win the next 4 games straight to win than match. As this match was in progress, Tyler Nearing (6) managed to out safety Mario Morra (10) with a 6-7 score. With this win Tyler earns the spot to play Arbi Seyranian (6). Arbi will not succomb to Tyler's shotmaking and wins the match 6-4 freeing up Tyler for to look for other action around the room. Next to go is Mike Patroyicz (7) as Elio D'Andrea (7) hands him a 7-3 wake up call.

Now with 4 left, Arbi tries his luck with Elio. Elio will not let Arbi get to the hill and wins the match 7-4. After a 5 minute break, Elio and Andrew tee it up. A grueling match goes hill/hill with Andrew having the final break in this climatic match. A super safe grinding match was not to be, Andrew scratches off the break with the 9 ball hanging over the pocket. Elio takes on the gimme combo to win the match and Andrew must settle for 3rd.

This sets up the final between Elio and John Morra. Even though John had been waiting for an hour to play, he still managed to jump out to a 4-0 lead. In the end, John wins by 10-4 over a worn out Elio. Well done to all contenders and 2 in a row for Johnny Morra…local sensation!

On the weekend of April 25-26 BigWigs in Newmarket, Ontario held the final event of the 2008-2009 404 series. I believe that all around this was the most successful and well received tour that has taken place as of yet in the Toronto area, in all roughly 200 different players participated in at least one event throughout the course of the year, with an average of close to 64 players per event.
